Developing Procedure Program
Engaging the workforce to develop procedures
Background
A client faced challenges in the development and implementation of procedures. Initially this client looked to an internal resource to produce their procedures but couldn’t get buy-in from Operations. Management didn’t understand why the process wasn’t working and reached out to DuraBante for help.
What DuraBante Did
Utilizing our proprietary GUIDE methodology we:
- GATHERED technical, cultural, and organizational information to determine client specific sustainability and tolerance for change.
- UNDERSTOOD that the following was taking place Based upon the information that was GATHERED:
- There was a gap between the INTENT of the written procedures and their application.
- The underlying information used to develop the procedures was flawed.
- DOCUMENTED “Human Factored” procedures using Engineering and Operations personnel recommendations.
- EXECUTED a sustainable procedure program that:
- Allowed for Operations personnel to review and provide comments.
- Provided a process for verifying and validating actions.
- Organized routine reviews.
- Set up “Train the Trainer” through the active participation of Operations personnel.
Results
- Established a sustainable “Human Factored” procedure program and completed over twenty-six Operations procedures within a six-month duration.
- Reduced risk of human performance errors by simplifying the processes Operations was using to control water.
- Reduced time to implementation by half compared to historical approval process for time sensitive procedures (directives).
- Unionized personnel realized over the duration of this effort the benefit of active participation and accepted accountability over the procedure development process.
- Developed an internally driven training program that incorporated annual reviews to maintain operational relevancy and accountability.
- Culture changed from highly resistant to highly engaged resulting in Technician led procedure development as part of a sustainable procedure program.
